Greyhounds have a very specific physical make-up so you need to be aware that they should be fed a diet different to other dogs. Many experts now recognise that a poor quality dog food packed with preservatives and additives can have a negative effect on your dogs behaviour.Behavioural problems with greyhounds also generally lie within what they are fed so a good quality food with no artificial flavourings or preservatives and no genetically modified ingredients is essential.
Retired and rescued greyhounds should be fed a low protein complete Greyhound Food mix that is specially designed for retired and non-working dogs.Unless your greyhound is overweight, it does no harm to feed them as much as they want to eat at first.
If you want to make sure your greyhound has a glossy coat, bright eyes and healthy skin then look to buy a food product which contains quality fish oils.To increase your greyhound’s oil levels you can always add a teaspoon of cod liver oil to one of their feeds. Or perhaps as a treat you could feed them an oily fish such as sardines or tuna (just check for bones first). As with all pet food, if you feed a dry food product you need to also provide a dish of fresh water.
Dogs are able to digest raw meat easily, but don’t encourage it.Pork and poultry are the two types of raw meat that should never be given to any dog. Please also remember dogs are omnivores and not carnivores. Feeding meat alone will cause malnutrition as will feeding vegetables and cereals alone.
A specialist greyhound food is the only way of ensuring your pet gets the right balance of nutrients needed in his diet.
